Significance of Ghushmeshwar Jyotirlinga
According to the Shiva Purana, worshipping Ghushmeshwar Jyotirlinga removes all sins and brings happiness and prosperity. The benefits of worshipping this Jyotirlinga are said to increase like the waxing moon. Listening to the greatness of Ghushmeshwar Mahadev brings happiness and removes troubles.
Story of Ghushmeshwar Jyotirlinga
Near Devgiri mountain, there lived a Brahmin named Sudharma with his wife Sudheha, a pious and devoted woman. However, they had no children. As per the advice of astrologers, Sudharma married Sudheha’s younger sister, Ghushma, with Sudheha’s consent. Ghushma was a devoted worshipper of Lord Shiva and made 108 earthen Shiva Lingas daily for worship. Soon, Ghushma gave birth to a beautiful son due to Lord Shiva’s blessings.
Sudheha’s Jealousy
Sudheha grew increasingly jealous of Ghushma and her child. One night, she killed Ghushma’s son and threw his body into the lake where Ghushma used to immerse the earthen Shiva Lingas.
Miracle
The next morning, when Ghushma went to the lake to immerse the Shiva Lingas, her son miraculously came back to life due to Lord Shiva’s blessings. Ghushma showed no signs of sorrow or joy. Impressed by her devotion, Lord Shiva appeared before her and asked her to ask for a boon. Ghushma requested Lord Shiva to reside there forever, which would benefit all true devotees like her. Lord Shiva agreed and established himself as the Ghushmeshwar Jyotirlinga.
